There are currently a number of competitions open to start-ups in all sectors giving them the opportunity to win investment, gain exposure for their business and be mentored by seasoned business owners.

For example, global online takeaway platform, Just Eat, has announced the opening of applications for the second phase of its 12-week, London-based food technology accelerator programme.

The firm is looking for five start-ups that have the potential to transform the food industry from “Farm to Fork to Bin”. This could involve anything from reducing food waste and improving transparency in supply chains to sustainable packaging and eco-friendly delivery options.

The programme is designed to help start-ups accelerate to Seed investments and get the right deal for future funding. It uses a Simple Agreement for Future Equity (SAFE) agreement and Just Eat will invest £2,000 to fund the winners through the programme. Applications for the programme close at midnight on 26 March.

Meanwhile, seed funding also features in the Start-Up Series competition, which gives the winner £150,000 in equity seed funding from a £1.8m Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). They will also receive extensive publicity for their business from startups.co.uk.

Business owners wishing to enter must be UK citizens aged 18 or over who run a concern based anywhere in the UK. The business must have been trading for 21 months or less, have fewer than £20,000 in gross assets and fewer than 25 employees. The competition closes on 14 March.

Finally, The Office Group (TOG) is running a competition that will award 100 start-ups in any sector with 12 months of free co-working space across London over the next three years, as well as networking opportunities through its 15,000-strong community.

Eligible start-ups must have no more than four workers and at least one founder must be aged between 18 and 25, as their focus is on young entrepreneurs. Applications for the competition close on 31 March.
