First London Technology Week Announced

Tech start-ups are gearing up to participate in the first London Technology Week, which will begin on 16 June 2014 and will centre on Tech City, the capital’s digital and start-up community, as well as at at EcXel exhibition centre in the Docklands area.

The announcement, which was made last week, said that the event has been created in response to the rapid development of the digital innovation sector that has been taking place in London over the past years.

Organised by UBM Live and London & Partners, the week will incorporate a broad range of events and activities for the technology and digital community and will showcase London’s technology credentials on the world stage and as a place where the world’s leading technology companies want to do business.

Speaking of the announcement, Mayor of London Boris Johnston said that the capital is at the forefront of digital innovation, with tech giants thriving there as well as dynamic new start-ups.

He added that this vibrant sector now supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in the city, with potential to grow on a huge scale, and welcomed the creation of London Technology Week as the latest initiative to harness the buzz around this exciting industry.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Rees, Executive Director of ExCel London said that the city has always embraced new technology, while east London in particular has been growing its reputation as Europe’s home of technology start-ups.

Statistics published in March that back up the decision to hold a tech week in London show that that city has attracted 602 projects, 19,476 jobs and £4.04bn of investment from overseas companies in tech over the last 10 years. This is because, to quote one business adviser, London is “synonymous with speed, innovation and buzz that fuels the digital economy”.
